Windscreen defroster

The German windscreen defroster was part of the “Sonderausrüstung für Winterbetrieb”, the special equipment for winter operation.

As far as I know it was not descibed in the 21/09/1942 Operating instruction N°D 662/206 related to winter equipment for Kubelwagen. However we can clearly see it on number of german war time pictures.

This defroster consists of a hardened glass panel set within a metal frame. Along the length of the frame, four electrically powered heating wires are strung, each suspended by small metal arms. These heating elements are compatible with both 12V and 6V electrical systems (a switch allow to choose the right voltage depending on the vehicle).

A rubber seal separates the glass panel from the windshield. This seal also traps warm air, which is intended to enhance the unit’s defrosting effectiveness.

The entire assembly is mounted to the windshield using two adjustable arms located at each end of the unit. These arms extend both upward and downward, with their thin tips inserted between the windshield glass and its rubber seal.

The unit includes an on/off switch and uses a standard KAKO plug for power connection. The power cable is covered in woven cloth for added durability and insulation.

This glass-and-metal assembly is further housed within a square, dunkelgelb-painted outer frame. A small On/Off switch for operation is positioned on the left side of this outer frame.

The BOSCH socket was plugged into the dashboard.
